There are a lot of reasons you may be considering a custom mirror. Whether you’re just trying to remodel and maximize your home’s available space or renovate to include new, bright, and reflective surfaces, you may need to adjust the specific dimensions of your project to fit both your vision and the room available. Customizing a mirror allows you to adjust to your project’s specific needs without compromise. You won’t have to worry about an almost-perfect fit; a custom cut with customized features will give you exactly the look you’re going for. And a lot of glass experts (like Jones Paint & Glass) can also accommodate customizing already-existing mirrors if you’re attached to the mirror, but need to make small alterations.

Can You Get Custom Mirror Sizes?

For a space like a home gym or dance studio, you need a mirror that maximizes the available space but also leaves room for important things like electrical outlets or light switches. You may also consider customizing your bathroom vanity, brightening the space, and enhancing the colors in the room. Smaller projects include replacing framed mirrors, custom sliding barn doors, or any other DIY project that you may have imagined.

Yes, you can get custom mirror sizes from glass and mirror companies offering custom cutting services. You can customize size, edge types, and create cut-outs for anything you may need to make room for, like electrical outlets, light switches, or windows. Custom mirrors like this may be a bit trickier to hang, so it’s worth investing in professional installation services. Whatever customizations you make, they’re sure to complement your distinctive space and create a unique environment.

How Much Do Custom Mirrors Cost?

It depends. The size of the mirror or the complexity of the project gives these types of services a wide price range: extremely simple and basic mirror cuts could be as low as $6 per square foot while high-end projects could go up to $20 per square foot. Larger mirrors, different edges, and/or making mirror size and shape all add to or alter the cost of your project.

What Mirror Features Can I Customize?

As a homeowner, you’ve likely got a specific vision for your home’s interior aesthetic. Having customized mirrors in all the traditional spaces can lend itself to that vision. The following are all of the most common feature alterations:

Size

The size of your mirror is directly related to the space and its intended use. They can be a small accent piece, a large statement piece, or a functional piece that might cover a whole wall or just a small fraction of it. Consider, too, that the larger the mirror, the more support it will require, so exceptionally large pieces will require sturdy, permanent mounting, whereas smaller pieces may be more “travel-ready”.

Edge Profiles

There are a wide range of edge profiles available. The main three are: flat polished, pencil polished, or beveled.

  • Polished. Flat polished edges are just as they sound. Glass chips and jagged edges are polished by running glass along a belt machine. The end result is sleek, clean lines.
  • Pencil Polish. Mimicking the smooth rounded finish of a pencil, it’s often used for furniture. The rounded edges protect against potential injuries from bumping up against it. It’s ideal in high-traffic areas where your mirror won’t be mounted directly on your wall.
  • Beveling. Beveling a mirror includes cutting and polishing edges with special attention to angle and size, adding elegance to a room without a traditional frame. A slight slant on the edge, usually around one inch wide, helps catch and manipulate light to enhance the ambiance of any room. The slant, or bevel, acts as something of a prism, altering light refraction and subsequently coaxing natural colors to come out of hiding.

Shape

There’s a huge range of available shapes, and you can fully explore your creativity here. From octagonal to oval, regal to racetrack, or even more complex and imaginative shapes that don’t even have a name, your options are fairly limitless.

Discuss your needs with your local custom mirrors expert to help you figure out exactly what shape you want and what might be most appropriate for your space. They can also help you determine how the mirror will best fit, accounting for a room’s pre-existing features like light switches.

Mirror Coating

The most common mirror coating is a thin sheet of metal, like aluminum or silver, but the coating will change the glass’s hardness. Consulting an expert on this is again appropriate as you might want to discuss exactly what that means for your project.

Mirror Thickness

The thicker a mirror, the more support it requires. ¼” is the standard and is thick enough to accommodate the more common types of mirror edges or polishing.

Final Thoughts

Whatever your project is, expert advice is indispensable. Mirror customizations can dramatically change the aesthetic of your space, but the minute details can be intricate and indispensable. Jones Paint and Glass offers at-site consultations so there won’t be any details lost in translation.
