Glass Options & Specifications

Choosing the right glass for your tabletop

Not all glass is equal — and the right choice depends on how and where your tabletop will be used. Here’s a quick guide to the options Jones Paint & Glass offers:

Glass Thickness

Thickness affects both the look and durability of your tabletop:

  • 1/4″ (6mm): Lightweight and ideal as a protective cover for existing tables — coffee tables, side tables, and antique furniture.
  • 3/8″ (10mm): The most versatile thickness. A solid, substantial feel that works well for dining tables, desks, and display surfaces.
  • 1/2″ (12mm): Premium weight for statement pieces — standalone glass dining tables, conference tables, and high-traffic commercial surfaces. Has a luxury feel and greater impact resistance.

Not sure which thickness fits your project? Our specialists can advise based on table size, use, and support structure.

Glass Types

  • Tempered Safety Glass: Our standard for all custom tabletops. Heat-treated to be four to five times stronger than regular glass, and designed to break into small, rounded fragments rather than sharp shards. Required for most table applications — especially those used around children, pets, or in commercial settings.
  • Clear Glass: The most popular choice. Maximum transparency and light reflection.
  • Low-Iron Glass: Standard glass has a slight green tint visible at the edges. Low-iron glass has a higher clarity with a true, neutral look — ideal for showpiece tables where color accuracy matters.
  • Frosted Glass: A soft, etched finish that diffuses light and obscures what’s underneath. Popular for desk surfaces and conference tables where privacy or a cleaner aesthetic is preferred.
  • Tinted Glass: Available in bronze, gray, and other tones. Reduces glare and adds a sophisticated color element. Works well in sunlit spaces and outdoor settings.

Edge Profiles

The edge finish defines the style and safety of your tabletop:

  • Flat/Seamed Edge: Clean, minimalist, and the most economical option. A slightly smoothed edge that removes sharpness.
  • Polished Edge: Smooth and bright — the standard finish for most tabletops. Elegant without being decorative.
  • Beveled Edge: A angled cut along the perimeter that catches light and adds a refined, decorative detail. Popular for dining tables and display pieces.
  • Pencil/Rounded Edge: A soft, curved edge — an excellent safety choice for households with children or high-traffic commercial spaces.
  • Ogee Edge: An S-shaped decorative profile for a more ornate, traditional look.

Frequently Asked Questions — Custom Glass Tabletops in Utah

What thickness of glass is best for a tabletop?

The best glass thickness depends on the table’s size, base support structure, and intended use. As a general guide: 1/4″ (6mm) works well as a protective cover over an existing surface; 3/8″ (10mm) is the most versatile choice for dining tables, coffee tables, and desks; and 1/2″ (12mm) is ideal for large standalone glass tops, commercial tables, or anywhere a heavier, more substantial feel is desired. Our specialists can recommend the right thickness for your specific project during a free consultation.

Do you use tempered glass for tabletops?

Yes. We use tempered safety glass as our standard for all custom tabletops. Tempered glass is heat-treated to be four to five times stronger than regular glass. Critically, if it does break, it shatters into small rounded pieces rather than the large sharp shards that regular glass produces, significantly reducing injury risk. Tempered glass is the safe, industry-standard choice for table surfaces, especially in households with children or pets and in commercial settings.

Can you replace a broken glass tabletop?

Yes. Glass tabletop replacement is one of the most common requests we handle. Bring your table base to any Jones Paint & Glass location, or have our specialists come to you for measurements. We will cut a new tempered glass top to your exact specifications — matching the original shape, size, thickness, and edge profile, or upgrading any of those elements if you’d like a change.

How much does a custom glass tabletop cost in Utah?

Custom glass tabletop pricing depends on the size, thickness, glass type, edge profile, and any special features such as cutouts. Jones Paint & Glass provides free consultations and on-site measurements, and all quotes are provided before any work begins. Contact your nearest location or submit a quote request online to get pricing for your specific project.

What edge styles are available for glass tabletops?

We offer multiple edge profiles for custom glass tabletops, including flat/seamed, polished, beveled, pencil/rounded, and ogee edges. Each profile has a distinct look and feel — from the clean minimalism of a polished edge to the decorative detail of a bevel. Our specialists can show you samples during your consultation to help you choose the right finish for your furniture and space
